2019 Survey of Antimicrobial Drug Use and Stewardship Practices in Adult Cows on California Dairies: Post Senate Bill 27

Antimicrobial resistance (AMR) is a global issue for both human and animal health. drug (AMD) use in animals can contribute to the emergence of AMR. In January 2018, California (CA) implemented legislation (Senate Bill 27; SB 27) requiring veterinary prescriptions medically important AMD food animals. The objective our survey was characterize use, health management, stewardship practices adult cows on CA dairies since implementation 27. 2019, we mailed questionnaire 1282 dairies. We received total 131 (10.2%) responses from 19 counties CA. Our results showed that 45.6% respondents included veterinarian their decision which injectable purchase. Additionally, 48.8% dairy producers AMDs were used treat sick cows. majority (96.8%) aware all uses require prescription. Approximately 49% agreed or strongly livestock does not cause problems humans. documents antimicrobial CA’s industry focus areas future research education.
